What Is A Granny Flat?

Granny Flat are also known as an accessory dwelling unit (ADU), detached dwelling, or secondary dwelling (a small, self-contained home built on an existing property). Councils and agents may also call them guest houses, caretaker’s cottages, or auxiliary dwellings.

Most granny flats include their own entrance, bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom (though they often share laundry facilities with the main home). Depending on the layout, they can offer a high level of independence for the occupant.

The 3 Types of Granny Flats

  1. In-home – Created within the existing house, such as a converted basement or interior wing.
  2. Home-extension – Built as an addition to the main house, sharing at least one wall.
  3. Detached – A completely separate building on the property.

Detached granny flats offer the most privacy, as they don’t share walls with the main home. In some setups, you might not see or interact with the main house occupants for weeks – making them ideal for renters or family members who value personal space.
